This weekend after Thanksgiving, I went out for a bit of shopping. One of the places I stopped was Steins, a garden center near our home. Originally my plan was to check out Christmas decorations, but in passing the bulb section near the checkout counter, I noticed a 90% off sale sign for all spring bulbs. There were still a lot of bulbs available and I couldn’t resist. I bought 2 bags of tulips, 2 of daffodils and 3 bags of allium. The only problem is that we are at November’s end and the ground is already frozen.
My plan is to winter these bulbs over in the vegetable crisper of our basement refrigerator and plant them in the spring when the ground thaws and the garden begins to green up. I actually did this same thing last year with some tulips and it worked out great. In the spring, I could see where things were coming up and was able to place all the refrigerated bulbs into the bed without disturbing emerging plants. All of the spring planted tulips grew, however they did bloom a bit later than tulips that had wintered over in the garden. I remember thinking that this actually was a plus because it spread out the bloom time for the tulips.
So for all you gardeners, apparently Black Friday is a good day to buy garden bulbs as well as cheap TVs!
