New Wonder Fan Flower growing happily in front garden

I found my Fan Flower among the annuals at a new garden center and was drawn in by the beautiful blue flowers growing in interesting fan shapes. It was a Proven Winners plant and was labeled (New Wonder® Fan Flower Scaevola aemula). The tag called for full sun and said that my plant was heat tolerant and easy care – always a good thing! I had never noticed this plant before in garden shops, but on this day it really impressed me. I bought one as an experiment and planted it in my front garden where it gets afternoon sun. It has been blooming ever since.

New Wonder fan flower is a tender perennial and is hardy in zones 10 & 11, so for us living in zone 5, it should be considered and annual. Usually used in containers, window boxes, hanging baskets or in my case as a bedding plant, fan flowers can be dug up in fall or cuttings may be taken for wintering indoors.

Based on my experience with New Wonder this year, I plan on using fan flowers in some of the pots on my patio to add a touch of blue to the arrangements replacing the Lobelia plants that usually stop blooming by the end of July.

Yes, I love that plant too. However have you noticed that it doesn’t produce seeds so it has to be reproduced by rooting slips which means that you have to over winter it in the house.

I know, but I plan on taking cuttings this fall and wintering them over.
