The Japanese beetles are back and are once again eating our roses. However, I am happy to report that we have far fewer beetles this year. Originally I started trapping beetles last year because our roses were being decimated and I finally decided to fight back. I bought 3 different beetle traps and hung them in our yard. Every couple of days I emptied those traps because they were at least half full. I killed thousands of beetles!
This year I have 3 traps again, but have been emptying them only once a week, mostly because the dead bugs have started to smell rotten and the bad odor warns new beetles not to enter the traps. When I do empty them, the traps are usually less than one quarter full.
Now, we have all heard that the best place for a beetle trap is in your neighbor’s yard. However none of my neighbors showed any interest in trapping those miserable bugs last year and we were overrun with them. I do realize that I am attracting beetles both from our yard and from our neighbor’s yards to my Japanese beetle traps. However, I feel that every beetle I kill does not attack my roses and each female beetle I dispose of does not lay 40 eggs in our lawn. Also after observing the decreased beetle population from last year, I am now on a mission to rid our neighborhood of Japanese beetles!
Thank somebody up there,we still do not have this curse!
Milly
